An understanding of cellular processes at the molecular level is central to contemporary biological and biomedical sciences. The principles and practise of biochemistry and molecular biology lay out the map for that understanding.
The focus of BIOC20000 is the molecular components of cells: protein structure and function, enzymes and catalysis, DNA structure and function, and the links between diet, disease, and cellular metabolism. In addition the course provides a hands-on introduction to bioinformatics approaches and the molecular biology techniques that are essential tools in the modern molecular life sciences.
What do I do in this course? 
BIOC2000 provides the platform knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology that can be applied across a range of fields. The course has a very strong practical element:
  • Understand the chemistry of how proteins and nucleic acids work in the cell.
  • Learn key bioinformatics concepts and use these to discover the evolutionary history of genes and proteins.
  • Understand the basic principles of enzymology and their applications to drug design.
  • Gain hands-on experience of cloning, as well as expression, purification, and functional analysis of proteins. 
  • Read and present cutting-edge primary literature
  • Understand the operation and regulation of metabolic pathways during health and disease.

A working knowledge of molecular biology and cellular biochemistry is central for the career development of research and biomedical scientists.

Program planning advice:
In conjunction with BIOL2202 and MICR2000, BIOC2000 is a commonly recommended course in various majors in the Bachelor of Science program. BIOC2000 is compulsory for the Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major, the Molecular Genetics stream of the Genetics major,  the Microbiology major, the Human Genetics and Immunology & Infectious Diseases streams of the Biomedical Sciences major, the Biomedical Sciences extended major, and the Chemistry & Chemical Biology stream of the Chemical Sciences dual major. The course coordinator recommends this course for inclusion in the BIoinformatics dual major, the Biophysics dual major, the Materials & Nanotechnology stream of the Chemical Sciences dual major, and the Plant Science major.
