Undergraduate scholarships and prizes

You must apply for our scholarships, but you don’t need to apply for our School prizes and awards, as they are awarded on merit.

We notify prize winners by mail and hold an awards ceremony normally each May to recognise students with outstanding performance in the previous year.

UQ Scholarships

Rowe Scientific Foundation Scholarship

Established in 2023 by a gift from Rowe Scientific Foundation, a scholarship of $5,000 may be awarded annually to a student who is enrolled in a major or field of study in Chemistry in the BSc, BSc(Hons), BAdvSc(Hons) or an associated dual program at UQ. Vacation Scholarships

UQ offers scholarships to undergraduates and postgraduates through the UQ Summer Research Program and UQ Winter Research Program.

External Scholarships

Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering’s Elevate: Boosting Women in STEM

The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering (ATSE) awards up to 500 scholarships to women and non-binary people in STEM.

In addition to financial support, students will be immersed in, and supported by, an inclusive network of ATSE’s partner organisations and influential leaders, and will be provided with professional development, mentoring, cross-sector networking and industry engagement as part of the program.

ALS Prize for Chemistry

Established in 2020 and maintained by an annual donation of $2,000 from Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd

Eligibility: students enrolled in a program administered by the Faculty of Science

Criteria: best overall performance in at least 8 units of level 3 chemistry courses of which 4 units comprise a significant laboratory component, including the course entitled ‘Advanced Experimental Chemistry’ with at least one course completed in the year of award

Value: $2,000

Biochemistry Alumni Prizes

Biochemistry Alumni Prize 1

Established in 1995 and maintained by donations from alumni of UQ's former Department of Biochemistry

Eligibility: Biochemistry students

Criteria: highest mark in BIOC2000

Value: $150

Biochemistry Alumni Prize 2

Established in 1995 and maintained by donations from alumni of UQ's former Department of Biochemistry

Eligibility: Biochemistry students

Criteria: highest overall mark for any four of BIOC3000, BIOC3003, BIOC3005, BIOC3006, BIOL3006 or BIPH3001

Value: $150

Edward Taylor Memorial Prize

Founded in 1934 from an endowed gift of 150 pounds made by the Queensland Bowling Association, in memory of Mr Edward Taylor, a patron and a veteran member of that Association. This prize is maintained by annual funding from the School

Eligibility: students in the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology

Criteria: greatest proficiency in first attempt at any three second-level chemistry courses studied in a single year or over two consecutive years

Value: books worth $200

Lesley Merle Williams Memorial Prize

Established in 2017 from a bequest from the estate of Dr Lesley Williams. Dr Williams was awarded a PhD in Bacteriology from UQ and was a UQ employee periodically between 1954 and 1997. She was awarded an Excellence in Teaching Award and an Order of Australia. She was also an author of three books on the history of women's health

Eligibility: students in the BSc, BAdvSc or BBiomedSc programs

Criteria: highest average of the marks in the practical component of BIOL3003 (Immunology) or equivalent and the practical component of PARA3002 (Biomedical Parasitology) or equivalent

Value: $1,000

Microbiology Prize

Established in 2002, this award commemorates the work done by the academic staff appointed between 1949 and 1972 towards the development of a broadly-based Department of Microbiology, with the support of tutorial, research, technical and administrative staff and graduate students. Staff were: Emeritus Professor V. B. D. Skerman (general microbiology, taxonomy, microbial data), Professor W. J. Halliday (immunology), Emeritus Professor K. J. C. Back (microbial metabolism), Dr J. G. Atherton (virology), Dr H. W. Doelle (fermentation technology), Dr A. C. Hayward (phytobacteriology), Dr G. H. G. Davis (medical bacteriology), Dr D. S. Teakle (plant pathology) and Dr I. C. MacRae (applied and environmental microbiology)

Eligibility: students completing the BSc or third year in the BAdvSc(Hons) program in the field of microbiology

Criteria: highest overall mark for eight units from BIOL3003, MICR3001, MICR3002, MICR3003 and MICR3004

The recipient's entitlement to the prize is conditional on them successfully enrolling in the BSc(Hons) or in the fourth year in the BAdvSc(Hons) programs in microbiology in the following year

SCMB Academic Excellence Awards

SCMB Academic Excellence Award in Biochemistry

Established in 2007 and maintained by ongoing financial commitment from the School

Eligibility: students enrolled in a program administered by the Faculty of Science

Criteria: best overall marks in four units of Level 2 courses and eight units of Level 3 courses in the discipline of biochemistry

Value: $500

SCMB Academic Excellence Award in Microbiology & Parasitology

Established in 2007 and maintained by ongoing financial commitment from the School

Eligibility: students enrolled in a program administered by the Faculty of Science

Criteria: best overall marks in four units of Level 2 courses and eight units of Level 3 courses in the discipline of microbiology or parasitology, or both

Value: $500

T. G. H. Jones Award for Academic Excellence in Chemistry

Established in 1971 by the bequest of $600 from the late Professor T. G. H. Jones, a member of the staff of the University from 1915, until his retirement in 1965. He was Professor of Chemistry from 1940 and a member of Senate for 25 years. From 2007, the prize is maintained by annual funding from the School

Eligibility: students enrolled in a program administered by the Faculty of Science

Criteria: best overall marks in four units from CHEM3001, CHEM3010 and CHEM3011 with at least one of the courses completed in the year of award
