Every semester we employ part-time, casual academic staff to deliver practical classes, workshops and similar class content in a range of courses.

We welcome applications from research assistants, postdoctoral fellows, honours and postgraduate students, and applicants who have previously taught in their field at a significant level who want to return to the workforce.

The courses in which we have positions are listed here with day, time and weeks, and a short description.

How to apply for first semester 2024

Applications for first semester are now closed - this page will be refreshed ahead of second semester.

Expressions of interest are made using the form at the following link (open in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari rather than Internet Explorer):

SCMB Casual Academic Application Form

In addition, applicants were to submit their academic transcript and resume with the words 'Casual Academic Staff Application' in the email subject line to adminenquiries@scmb.uq.edu.au

Applications close Friday 5 January 2024.

An application does not guarantee a position. While preferences are considered, you may be offered an alternative course. Unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted. Successful applicants will be contacted by 12 February 2024

Requirements

To be considered, you must:

  • hold a minimum of an undergraduate degree majoring in the discipline in which you seek to demonstrate
  • have relatively recent experience with the course material or a demonstrated capacity to become familiar with the material in a short time.

We welcome applications from:

  • research assistants
  • postdoctoral fellows
  • honours and postgraduate students
  • applicants who have previously taught in their field at a significant level who want to return to the workforce.

We’ll assess you on your application and performance at an interview, which will include a technical skills analysis.

You don’t have to work or study at UQ to apply.

Working hours and pay rate

Hours vary according to course timetables.

Classes typically run from 9.50am to 12.50pm and 1.50pm to 4.50pm on some or all of the weeks between 19 February and 24 May 2024. Marking work may be available thereafter.

You’ll need to commit for each week a course's classes are held, although exceptions will be considered where explained in advance. This is a real job and you are expected to commit to it.

We provide some training.

The  pay rate at November 2023 is $50.19 per hour ($59.54 per hour for PhD-qualified).  These rates will rise in early December 2023 and again on 31 January 2024.

Research assistants and post docs who already have an appointment at UQ will normally incorporate casual academic work into their duties by arrangement with their supervisor and not be paid additional casual rates, depending on individual circumstances such as employment fraction.
