Our honours programs enhance your employment opportunities and provide direct entry to postgraduate training.

Our programs

You can study honours as a single year after completing the three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) or three-year Bachelor of Biotechnology (BBiotech) degrees, or as the final year of a four-year Bachelor of Advanced Science (BAdvSc) program.

Choose from:

Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) (4 years)
Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours) (1 year)
Bachelor of Science (Honours) (1 year).

Several of our degree programs are accredited by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.

What's involved

You'll pursue formal coursework and an individual research project under the supervision of a School academic or qualified external supervisor.

Undertaking honours will:

provide you with invaluable in-depth training, particularly in the areas of research methods, problem solving and communication skills
help you develop and demonstrate your capabilities for critical thought
prepare you for a research higher degree.

Honours in industry projects

If you're already studying undergraduate chemistry, molecular biosciences or biotechnology at UQ and plan to do honours, you may be able to undertake your research project with one of our industry partners.

We have established relationships within the biotechnology, chemical, pharmaceutical, food processing and pathology industries.

By doing honours in industry, you will:

experience a commercial workplace
make career contacts
get support and guidance from UQ as well as your industry supervisor.

UQ Summer and Winter Research Programs

UQ Winter Research Program

Undergraduates who have completed at least one year of study at the time of application, and master's by coursework students, can apply for a UQ Winter Research Scholarship.

The program runs for four to six weeks over the winter vacation period (from mid-June to mid-July).

All successful winter scholars receive a scholarship, and you can count your participation towards attainment of the UQ Employability Award.

UQ Summer Research Program

Undergraduates and postgraduates can apply to engage in a research internship over the summer vacation period (from mid-November to mid-February).
