Title: Using synthetic tools to enhance the sensitivity of magnetic resonance

Abstract: NMR and MRI systems both suffer from inherently low sensitivity which results in low signal-to-noise, hampers detection limits, and increases scanning times. Hyperpolarisation techniques based on para-hydrogen are a potentially simple and cost-effective way to boost NMR signals by several orders of magnitude. However, the challenge is in the synthetic methods used to activate para-hydrogen and unlock this latent hyperpolarised signal. In this seminar we will explore some recent work from our group that uses organic synthesis, reactivity, and catalysis to expand the scope of para-hydrogen based NMR hyperpolarisation. This will include: benzoquinone-mediated redox chemistry inspired by electrochemical redox mediators to allow hyperpolarisation of alcohols and water; the use of 2H-labelling to enhance the signals of oxime derivatives; the use of photochemistry to extend this methodology to hydrazones; and some emerging applications in forensic and agricultural chemistry using benchtop NMR systems.
Bio: Dr Philip L. Norcott is a Lecturer in Chemistry at Flinders University. He completed his PhD from the University of Sydney, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of York, UK, and the Australian National University, working in the areas of total synthesis, NMR methodology, labelling, catalysis, and electrochemistry. He launched his independent research program in 2021 with an ARC DECRA and joined Flinders as a Lecturer in 2025. He has served on the Early Career Advisory Board of JACS Au, and is the 2026 recipient of the Athel Beckwith Lectureship from the Organic Division of the RACI. His research group is currently working on new methods and applications for hyperpolarised NMR and sustainable synthesis.
