Title: Characterisation of human T cell responses towards human and avian influenza viruses

Abstract: Seasonal influenza viruses continue to cause significant morbidity and mortality annually despite vaccines being widely available. Further, incidences of avian influenza outbreaks are increasing, sparking fears that they may cause the next viral pandemic in humans. My research focusses on understanding T cell responses towards seasonal influenza viruses and those with pandemic potential, including avian influenza viruses to inform and better future vaccine and therapeutic efforts. This seminar will provide an overview of my T cell research program with a focus on T cell targets, T cell cross-reactivity and the potential and role of pre-existing immunity towards avian influenza viruses.

Bio: Dr. Emma Grant is a LIMS Stone Research Fellow and Group Leader based at La Trobe University. She completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne and, supported by her NHMRC CJ Martin Fellowship, relocated to Cardiff University before returning to Monash University. She then relocated to La Trobe University supported by her ARC DECRA Fellowship, where she established and leads a research team focusing on immune responses to influenza. Her work aims to inform next-generation therapeutics and vaccines. She has studied immune responses in high-risk populations and identified virus-derived targets for future treatments. Her achievements include multiple fellowships and prestigious awards.
