World Mosquito Day commemorates the discovery by Sir Ronald Ross in 1897 that female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.
Today, more than 125 years later, mosquito-borne diseases kill more than one million people and infect up to 700 million each year – almost one in ten people.
It is also a day that recognises efforts around the world to eradicate not just malaria, but diseases such as Dengue, Japanese encephalitis and Zika that are also transmitted by mosquitoes.
Our School is on the cutting-edge of research into understanding the structure of mosquito-borne viruses and developing the next generation of diagnostics, therapies and vaccines - our contribution to the world-wide effort in eradicating disease in both humans and animals.
