Speaker: Dr Michael Healy

Title: Unfolding the AlphaFold Revolution

Abstract: AlphaFold2 has transformed structural biology by enabling accurate ab initio prediction of protein structures from amino acid sequences alone. However, the practical application of AlphaFold2 in research — from running predictions to correctly interpreting output confidence metrics — presents a significant barrier for many non-structural biologists. Here, I will present a how-to guide that provides accessible, step-by-step guidance for using AlphaFold2, covering the basics of running structure predictions and interpreting key output files including pLDDT scores and PAE plots. Additionally, this workshop will cover best practices for presenting and sharing AlphaFold2 models in academic publications, addressing a critical need for standardised reporting in the field. This workshop aims to equip researchers at all experience levels with the knowledge required to confidently apply and communicate AlphaFold2-based structural predictions in their work.

Bio: Michael Healy is a protein biochemist based in Brisbane, Australia, specialising in the structural biology of large protein complexes. His research has focused on unravelling the molecular architecture of the Commander trafficking assembly and the Mediator complex — work that has yielded high-profile publications in journals including Cell, Nature Communications, Structure, eLife, and Traffic. Michael also pursues active interests in protein design and computational biology, including phylogenetic analysis and AI-assisted structure prediction.
